Tai Chi Straight Sword

Choosing the Tai Chi Sword Yang style 32 form as my weapon this year was a big undertaking. This is partly due to the fact that I struggle learning new moves and sequences at the best of times and I'm having to learn from a video. I had previously learned part 1, but it's still been a slow process. Sometimes I choose doing reps of the form currently learned over learning new moves. (my brain needs a break at times) And then there are times I settle in to learn more and advance forward in the form.

There was a time when I thought I may only get about 3/4 of the way through. I pushed through and recently found myself getting close to the end. It was at that point that I knew I’d be able to learn all 32 sequences and also have some time to put it together and even work on fine tuning the newer moves.

Friday and Saturday I was able to add those last few moves. It’s not cemented in my brain yet, but the groundwork is there. The last 3-4 moves have been a challenge as there is different foot work, directional changes and some new arm movements. The video I was using was difficult to follow and so I had to go back-and-forth between three different videos to understand the stepping pattern and what my hands need to do.

There is a sense of accomplishment in completing the form and I am thankful for the learning process and how the form is evolving as I continue to work on it. Yes, it was a big undertaking and also well worth it. The form is more than just a sequence of moves now and is taking on a life of its own as it starts to embody the energy and spirit of Tai Chi.
